Beware of rubber backed rugs!

Good afternoon! I hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday.

I just wanted to write a quick article concerning the danger of using rubber backed rugs on your carpet. We cleaned a large daycare last night and there were several portions of carpet in the shape of a rectangle that had a yellow tint to it. This is due to the rubber backed kids rugs sitting on it for too long. It is very unlikely to correct this damage.

What causes this?

There is a preservative called BHT (butylhydroxytoluene) used on backings of some rugs. The off-gassing of BHT being trapped under the rug can yellow the carpet underneath. This can also happen with vinyl and other floorings as well. BHT is also found in particle board that is used in cheaper end furniture.

What can you do about it?

If you are going to have these items make sure they are moved frequently. You could also place a safe rug mat underneath. It is best just to avoid these types of rugs completely. In my opinion, it shouldn’t be legal to produce rugs like this due to how many floors I’ve seen ruined in my client’s homes.

I hope this helps you save your flooring and guide you in your rug buying decisions.

Have a great day!
